Enrolment Of Advocates

The Registrar of the High Court, HW Rosemary Bareebe, represented the Chief Registrar at the enrolment of 134 advocates at the Court of Appeal on Thursday.

In her remarks, HW Bareebe extended her congratulations to the new advocates, acknowledging the day as a major milestone in their legal careers. She reminded them of the significant responsibility they now carry as members of the legal profession, emphasizing the need to uphold ethical standards and serve the public with integrity. "You are now officers of court," she said. "Always remember that justice is at the heart of our profession, and you are the custodians of that justice."

She also urged them to steer clear of corruption and misconduct, and to embrace their roles with humility and dedication, stating, "Our integrity is the foundation of justice, and only through humility and unwavering commitment can we truly serve the people."

Ms. Peace Athocon, representing the Secretary of the Uganda Law Council, echoed these sentiments and congratulated the advocates on their achievements. She encouraged them to cultivate their spiritual values, emphasizing that "there's nothing you can do outside your faith." Drawing inspiration from Proverbs 13:11, she reminded the advocates that "wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it." Ms. Athocon further urged them to maintain integrity and approach their work with honesty, as this would help them build an impeccable reputation in their legal careers.

The Vice President of the Uganda Law Society, Mr. Anthony Assimwe, applauded the newly enrolled advocates for their accomplishment. "This is the beginning of a lifetime dedicated to justice," he noted, stressing that they now play a crucial role in the legal system.

Mr. Assimwe urged them to work with professionalism and diligence and to consider giving back to society through legal aid and pro bono services, ensuring justice is accessible to all. "You are expected to uphold justice at all times," he said, "and legal aid is one way to ensure that justice reaches those who need it the most."

He also highlighted the importance of continuous learning, urging them to embrace mentorship and growth. "Every day is a learning process. Be open to being mentored and, in turn, mentor others."

Mr. Assimwe concluded by assuring the advocates that the Society is fully committed to supporting their professional growth. “We are here to ensure you have the support and opportunities you need to thrive in your legal careers,” he said.

Among the newly enrolled advocates was the Deputy Registrar of Kabale High Court Circuit, HW Catherine Agwero, who was warmly celebrated by her colleagues.

The ceremony, attended by family members and friends, was moderated by HW Timothy Lumunye, Personal Assistant to the Chief Registrar.
